Emergency contraception

A completely private consultation service, aiming to be as stress-free and efficient as possible.

What to expect

The emergency contraceptive, also known as the morning after pill, is a tablet taken after unprotected sex to help prevent pregnancy — including if regular contraception has failed or may not have been used or taken correctly. It's most effective the sooner it's taken, so acting quickly and consulting your pharmacist is important. Available directly from your local pharmacy without a prescription for those over 16, subject to meeting certain criteria, and free of charge to medical card holders when a valid card is presented.

How effective is it?

Not 100% effective — there's a chance you may have already ovulated when you take it. Taking it as soon as possible after unprotected sex gives the best chance of success.

Your options

Levonorgestrel 1.5mg

Within 72 hours

More effective the earlier it's taken.

ellaOne (Ulipristal Acetate 30mg)

Within 120 hours (5 days)

More effective the earlier it's taken.

Supply may not be possible if

  • Too much time has passed since unprotected sex (max 120 hours)
  • You take other medications or have conditions that make it unsafe
  • You're allergic to any ingredient in the medication
  • You've already taken emergency contraception within this cycle
  • Your last period was irregular in some way

Our pharmacists will determine what's suitable for you during your consultation. If the morning after pill isn't suitable, they're trained to direct you to the right further help or support.

How it works

Call into your local pharmacy for a private consultation — the pharmacist will ask some questions to check what's suitable for you. If appropriate, you'll be given the medication as a single dose, along with a Patient Information Leaflet to read carefully.
