Signs you may need an eye test

Getting checked for glasses by an optician could make life so much easier.

If you have any of these symptoms – its time to get an eye test.

1. Unexplained headaches
Ever get headaches after doing close-up work such as reading or working at a computer? How about after periods of distance vision, like watching TV or driving? If the answer’s yes, you need to book an appointment with the optician – glasses could really help.

2. Blurred vision
If your vision ever changes or distorts, it could be a sign you need glasses. Test yourself by regularly looking at something you see every day, such as the spine of a book or a number plate, to check whether you can still read it. Try doing this one eye at a time for a more thorough test.

3. Wavy vision
When you look at straight lines such as door or window frames and see them as wavy or kinked, there’s a chance you’re experiencing age-related macular degeneration, a common reason for needing glasses. Again, test yourself one eye at a time to double check.

4. Tired eyes and difficulty focusing
We all experience tired eyes as a symptom of everyday fatigue, but when it’s a persistent problem that occurs after common activities like driving and reading, it’s well worth getting your eyes tested by an optician.

5. Painful or red eyes
Healthy eyes shouldn’t hurt or appear red; if they do, there’s a chance you’ve got an eye condition that needs to be seen to by an optician.
Blurred or misty vision is another common vision-related ailment that you should get checked out professionally. These symptoms could be an early sign of cataracts, glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration, which opticians can help you with alongside the usual long-sighted or short-sighted examinations.

Book your eye test today at your local McGreals Opticians or online here.

10 Steps to CPR

10 Steps to CPR

Performing CPR properly can mean the difference between life and death. CPR, which stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is an emergency procedure done when someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped. CPR techniques vary depending on the age or size of the patient. Those who are certified or trained in CPR are ideally the ones who should perform the procedure.

Step 1

Survey the area. Although it is best to begin CPR as quickly as possible, the person who is about to perform CPR needs to ensure that he will be safe while performing the procedure. This may include looking for traffic, fires or other potential dangers.

How to Survive Exam Time….

How to Survive Exam Time....

While the rest of us (sorry) will be looking forward to the sort of scorching weather conditions that normally greet the start of the Leaving Cert – for students, these few last days before the exams start to represent ‘crunch time’.

Take a read – before you hit the books for the day…

1. Exam time can be an anxious, stressful & potentially overwhelming experience.
Remember, test taking anxiety is normal and because anxiety is an emotion it will pass if you give it time. Rescue Remedy can help manage your exam stresses

2. Don’t forget to mind yourself, especially in a couple of key ways:
Sleep: you should be aiming for 8-10 hours per night, make sure to try to wind down before going to sleep. You don’t go from 5th gear straight to 1st gear when driving a car, your mind works similarly, it needs time to slow down before sleep.
Eat regular meals and eat well, this will help your ability to think, concentrate and last the distance. supplement your diet with a multi-vitamin to prevent you getting run-down on the lead up and during the exam period.
Exercise will help to relieve some of the build-up of stress and improve your mood, try to build it into your plan, walk the dog, go for a swim or cycle or anything that gets you active.
Make time for some fun, it’s not only allowed, its recommended. Schedule in specific things you enjoy doing at weekends or during breaks between exams.

Skin Cancer On The Rise In Ireland & How To Protect Yourself!

With summer 2016 kicking off last weekend, we wanted to write this article to highlight the importance of protecting ourselves from the harmful rays. Some of us are guilty of using sun beds in the past and burning our skin while on holidays, myself included. Some of these figures about skin cancer may make you re think how you protect yourself from the harmful effects of UV Rays.

Skin cancer is on the rise here in Ireland, in fact skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Ireland today with over 8,000 new cases diagnosed each year. A finding on IrishHealth.com claims that 700 Irish people are newly diagnosed with melanoma – the most deadly form of skin cancer – every year and two people die from the disease every week! How scary is that! We all worry about breast cancer and ovarian cancer but why dont we worry about skin cancer?

I suppose it all comes down to us Irish feeling that because we dont live in a ‘hot’ country, we have nothing to be worried about – Ah we’ve no sun here, so I’m grand’. When in actual fact it’s quite the opposite. We have extremely harmful rays beaming down on us daily, even if it’s not sunny and more people are being diagnosed with different forms and stages of skin cancer as it is hugely on the rise. The easiest way to protect yourself is to cover up. Another big factor is sunbeds – they are incredibly dangerous and drastically increase the chances of developing skin cancer so they are best avoided.

Some people think about sun protection only when they spend a day at the beach. But sun exposure adds up day after day, and it happens every time you are in the sun.

Simply staying in the shade is one of the best ways to limit your UV exposure. If you are going to be in the sun..

Slip on a shirt
Wear suncreen
Put on a hat
Wear sunglasses

As part of Skin Cancer Awareness Month at McGreals Pharmacy we are giving away a free car sun shades in store with every child product purchased to do our bit to help protect children from the harmful rays while travelling. For your nearest store location click here
